PanThema

Welcome to the website for PanThema, or Thema for short. Thema is a new global classification system for books, with wide and growing international participation.

Intended for use by all book industry stakeholders, Thema is a flexible standard that allows each market to retain its unique cultural voice while still presenting a unified hierarchy that rationalizes book categorization. The goal of Thema is to reduce confusion about subject codes for both upstream and downstream trading partners, in order to facilitate the sale of more books.

Launched at the Frankfurt International Book Fair in October 2012, Thema includes participants from 15 national groups:

Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Pan Arab Group, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
